PLENARY 5 Multimodal Experience
Michael Proulx
Synthetic and natural crossmodal mappings explored with sensory substitution
Michael Proulx is a cognitive psychologist with a primary interest in perception and
attention. He first studied psychology at Arizona State University, where he received
his BS and conducted research on categorization. He then received an MA and PhD at Johns
Hopkins University, where he began research on visual attention and perception. Dr.
Proulx is interested in exploring how sensory modalities interact and contribute to
perception and cognition, and found during postdoctoral work in Germany that sensory
substitution devices for blind persons provided a unique approach to crossmodal
perception. He is now Lecturer in Cognitive Psychology at Queen Mary University of London.
