THE SCIENCE OF CONSCIOUSNESS CONFERENCE

Pre-Conference Workshop

CONSCIOUSNESS, MEMORY AND MUSIC

Music, consciousness and memory appear to be intimately linked. Listening to music activates not only auditory cortex, but limbic emotional circuits and other brain areas, and has been used to soothe and alter consciousness since pre-historic times. Recently music has been used in nursing homes to help patients with dementia recall memories. Indeed, many researchers believe consciousness is more closely analogous  to music than to computation. In this workshop, Alexander Graur, a professor at the University of Turin, Italy, will introduce and develop concepts linking music to consciousness and cognition. The goal is to elicit further research in music-based therapies for mental and cognitive disorders.

Music and Memory: research and applications

Empirically, the role of Music in the mechanics of Memory was known since the dawn of mankind. Recent research shown the validity of these ideas; the physiological and psychological aspects of Music were studied and the results applied in various degrees by music-based therapies; the results are encouraging.

This workshop aims to introduce the issue to scientists in order to elicit further research and application in therapy.

Applications in early detection and cure of Alzheimer, ADD, learning and developmental disturbs will be presented.
