BARRY E. STEIN

An unconscious neural strategy synthesizes information from different senses,

creates a coherent picture of external events, and executes adaptive behaviors.

Barry E. Stein is a neuroscientist and educator.  He is considered a pioneering force in the study of multisensory integration – how the brain integrates information from the different senses. He is Past President of the Association of Anatomy, Cell Biology and Neurobiology Chairpersons, Past President of the Association of Medical School Neuroscience Chairs, on numerous editorial boards, a member of numerous scientific organizations, and a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He has won various scientific and teaching awards and has been the Keynote Speaker or Plenary Speaker at numerous national and international scientific meetings. He has given more than 200 invited talks, trained 22 MA and Ph.D. students and 39 postdoctoral fellows, has mentored many junior faculty members, and has had many visiting scientists work in his laboratory. His current academic title is Chairman of the Department of Neurobiology and Anatomy, and Professor of Neurology at Wake Forest University School of Medicine in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. He received his Ph.D. degree from the City University of New York, and was a postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Anatomy and the Brain Research Institute at UCLA Medical School.
