Professor Robert Shulman has been the leader in the application of NMR methods to biochemical and biomedical problems for 5 decades.  At Bell Laboratories, where he was head of biophysical research, starting in 1961his group led the way into NMR studies of proteins and nucleic acids. In ~1974 his NMR interests shifted from macromolecular studies to NMR studies of metabolites in vivo.  Since then he has developed the field of Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy in vivo where his 13C NMR studies have focused on muscle and brain in rats and humans. Dr. Shulman holds bachelor’s and Ph.D. degrees from Columbia University, and has been a member of the Yale faculty since 1979.  He came to Yale from Bell Laboratories in New Jersey, where he had been for 26 years.
